Oral history interview with William Staadecker, Nov. 6, 1981.

Staadecker first discusses his parents. His father emigratd from Germany in 1890 and established a millinery business in Seattle. His mother, Ada Bonner, who was not Jewish, was a millinery designer from New York City. His father was active in the fur exchange, Pacific National Bank, the Seattle Symphony, and Temple de Hirsch. He helped many relatives to emigrate and during the Holocaust rescued twenty-two family members. Staadecker describes the social divide between German and Eastern European Jews, and how his parents had friends in both communities as well as many non-Jewish friends. He tells how his father helped Russian Jews to join the Glendale Country Club. He then talks about his own early life and education, attending Garfield High School, being confirmed at Temple de Hirsch, and joining Pi Tau Pi fraternity. He remembers Rabbi Koch, Nathan Eckstein, Herbert Schoenfeld, Bessie Berman, Julius Lang, and the Marcus Lees family. He also mentions his army service in World War II, opening his own jewelry business, and being active in the Seattle Art Museum.
